The latest data from the Public Health Institute in the Democratic Republic of the Congo shows 10,060 confirmed cases, in an outbreak that has become the largest and deadliest in the country's history, surpassing the Ebola epidemic that occurred between 2018 and 2020, according to data reported by Reuters on Tuesday. The current outbreak was announced in mid-May and is caused by the rare "Bundi Bugyo" strain of the Ebola virus. This outbreak is considered the second deadliest wave of the epidemic in historical terms, following the West Africa outbreak between 2014 and 2016, which recorded more than 28,000 cases and nearly 11,000 deaths, most of which were concentrated in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Concerns are not limited to the number of infections and deaths within the Congo, as the outbreak has spread to other countries, with cases reported in Kenya and Nigeria during October. Kenya announced nine cases, including deaths, after a man traveled from Congo through Uganda to Nairobi, before dying from the disease. Nigeria has also become the latest African country to report a case linked to the current outbreak. In Nigeria, health officials are investigating how the patient, the wife of a Swiss diplomat who had not previously traveled to Congo, became infected. The Swiss government stated that she is believed to have contracted the virus in Uganda, while the woman and her husband were airlifted to hospitals in Switzerland on Monday for medical care. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection and its transmission route. Uganda had recorded 20 cases during May and June, most of which were imported from Congo, before the World Health Organization declared the country free of Ebola in August. However, Ugandan authorities continue preventive measures and border monitoring, announcing that citizens returning from Congo, who have a travel history there, will be subjected to a 21-day quarantine. The difficulty of containing the outbreak is increasing due to the transmission of the virus within communities and the challenges of tracing contacts, along with field challenges including armed conflict, poor roads, resource shortages, and a lack of trust among some populations in response teams. According to the Associated Press, about 80% of the recorded cases in Congo came from outside the lists of monitored contacts, indicating that there are transmission chains that authorities have not been able to fully track. The danger of the "Bundi Bugyo" strain lies in the absence of an approved vaccine or effective treatment for it so far, which increases the importance of early detection of cases, isolating the infected, and providing supportive care, in addition to tracing contacts and enhancing preventive measures in healthcare facilities and border crossings. The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of coordinating the response among countries, but it does not recommend imposing travel or trade restrictions with affected countries. With infections surpassing the 10,000 mark, the challenge for health authorities is not only to contain the outbreak within the Democratic Republic of the Congo but also to prevent its spread to new countries and to enhance the capacity of health systems to quickly detect and respond to cases before the epidemic expands and pressures on health services in the region increase.
