Student protests in France continue for the third consecutive week, amid rising demands for improved school conditions and increased spending on education, as the government faces growing financial and political pressures with the start of budget discussions and the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for 2027. High school students are preparing to organize a new protest today (Tuesday) in the 13th district of Paris, supported by student unions and teachers' unions, in light of the lack of a clear government response to their demands, putting authorities to a new test in containing student anger. Last Tuesday, the protests saw participation from more than 250,000 people across the country, calling for additional resources for the education sector, while some of the actions were marred by violence and clashes with police that resulted in the arrest of about 7,000 people, according to the published article. The students' demands center around a shortage of staff, overcrowded classrooms, and disrupted class schedules, despite the government announcing emergency measures to address some concerns. Bloomberg reported that the government does not have enough leeway for a significant increase in the education ministry's budget, amid Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's efforts to pass strict spending constraints and reduce the budget deficit to 5% of economic output by 2027. The government's task becomes more difficult with the opposition's reluctance to make concessions regarding the budget, after having ousted two prime ministers in the past two years over spending plans. Additionally, market disruptions have led to borrowing costs rising to levels not seen in the country for about 25 years, according to the article. Education Minister Édouard Geffray told France Inter radio that the protests could lead to the closure of about 200 schools (Tuesday), noting a relative decline in the momentum of the movements compared to previous weeks. In a sign of growing public support, a poll by the "Cluster 17" foundation, published on Sunday, showed that 57% of the French support the student protests. The foundation's founder, Jean-Yves Dormagen, stated that the students' demands are understood by the community amid the decline of the public education system. Support also extended to Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who participated (Tuesday) in a demonstration outside a school in the suburbs of Paris, calling for support for students and defending their basic rights, according to Reuters. At the same time, calls are rising to resume "Yellow Vest" protests over rising fuel prices, while labor unions have called for protests and strikes on November 5 in rejection of the budget proposal, demanding job protection and wage increases, which threatens to continue the pressure on the government as the presidential deadline approaches.
